Installing CoolTerm_v2.0.0 to Windows 7

Post by tnm »

Hi,
Roger announced the good news: a new version of CoolTerm (v2.0.0) has been released.

I tried to replace the 1.9.1 version installed on my laptop with 2.0.0, but problems popped up installing the new version.

As a result, after running CoolTerm.exe, the system issued a message:
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are using. Use your system information to determine the correct version of the program (32-bit or 64-bit) and contact the software publisher."

This post raises many questions because:
1) version 1.9.1 installed on my laptop without problems.

2) Following Roger's recommendations, I installed a helper program
Microsoft Visual Studio C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) - 14.0.23026 .
Running this program (file vc_redist_x86.exe) resulted in the message "Installation completed successfully".

3) Recommendation "…the included "Libs" and "Resources" folders must reside in the same location as the CoolTerm application" has been implemented. The unzipped programs are located in the shared folder c:\Users\tnm\Desktop\CoolTermWin.

Has anyone been able to install CoolTerm 2.0.0 on Windows 7 SP1 ?

Best wishes

Hi tnm,

Thanks for your post. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a Windows 7 SP1 system to test CoolTerm with. I double-checked the system requirements for desktop applications built by Xojo, which is the environment I'm using to develop CoolTerm:

Previous releases of Xojo, including 2022r1, supported Windows 7 SP1: https://documentation.xojo.com/resource ... sktop-apps
The current release (2022r3) no longer supports Windows 7 SP1: https://documentation.xojo.com/resource ... sktop-apps

I built CoolTerm 2.0.0 with Xojo 2022r2. Unfortunately, I can't find any information on whether application built with that version run on Windows 7 SP1. Perhaps support for Windows 7 SP1 was dropped with Xojo 2022r2, and perhaps this is why CoolTerm 2.0.0 isn't running on your system. Unfortunately, this is unclear at the time of this writing due to the lack of information. All I know is that with Xojo2022r3 going forward, the minimum system requirements will be Windows 8.1.

While the new Xojo version brings important improvements and fixes I need to keep developing CoolTerm, I can still compile 2.0.0 with Xojo 2022r1, which I did today. Here are the download links for theses special builds which hopefully work on Windows 7 SP1:

64-Bit: https://freeware.the-meiers.org/CoolTer ... lBuild.zip
32-Bit: https://freeware.the-meiers.org/CoolTer ... lBuild.zip

Please download the appropriate version (32 or 64 bit) and see if it works on your system. Please post back to the forum once you know more. Thanks!

Please note that v2.0.0 of CoolTerm will be the last version to run on Windows 7 SP1. You will need Windows 8.1 as a minimum to run future releases.

Regards,

Roger

Hi Roger,
Thank you for your response.
My attempt to use the link
32-Bit: https://freeware.the-meiers.org/CoolTer ... lBuild.zip
gave the following result:

Hmm, not sure why you are getting an error. I tested these links. Simply clicking on them should download the zip archive.

Roger, congratulations!

The program CoolTerm 2.0.0 opens after the file
https://freeware.the-meiers.org/CoolTer ... lBuild.zip
is downloading to drive D:\ and after the CoolTerm.exe file is running.

Thus, it is currently possible to do without upgrading from Win7 to Win8.

I wish you continued success.

Great! Thanks for confirming that the special build works. I will add a link to it to my freeware website with a note to let users know what this will be the last build that supports Windows 7.

Good news!

I was able to run the latest build made with Xojo2022r3 on a Windows 7 SP1 virtual machine. My virtual machine is 32-bit, so I was only able to test the 32-bit build of CoolTerm.

I think I will be able to support Win 7 SP1 for some time longer.

However, it is important to make sure the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 from Microsoft is installed. It can be downloaded from this URL:
