CoolTerm - Option for AMD 64 bit installer like there is for Intel 64 bit installer on Linux?

Post by brown_roy »

Hello,

I wanted to resurrect this post after I did some more testing on different AMD and Intel systems. I am creating a new post because it seems like the issue I am seeing seems to be more related to the CPU architecture than the application itself and I wanted to see if it is possible to narrow down and address the issue in the CoolTerm application.

To summarize, here is the issue I am facing -
On Linux systems, every time I connect the serial port to /dev/USB0 device, the CoolTerm UI becomes unstable and the responsiveness becomes extremely choppy. On some systems, the "Connect"/"Disconnect" button just disappears and does not show up until I hit the "X" button to try to close the CoolTerm application. In some cases, the UI and typing responses seems very slow which causes the button over which I hover the mouse to not register at least a second after I hover. Sending data also seems very slow.

All of the above issues seems very specifically related to AMD CPU's with Silab devices on Linux. I have tried it with -
1. AMD 5700X3D CPU with NVIDIA graphics
2. AMD 7840HS with and without NVIDIA graphics
3. AMD 8845HS without NVIDIA graphics
4. Intel 12700k without NVIDIA graphics
5. Intel 1145G7 with NVIDIA graphics
6. Intel 13500T with internal graphics
7. Intel 6600k with and without NVIDIA graphics

I have never had any issues with the 4 Intel systems on Linux but had issues with all 3 AMD systems. The application is still workable on 5700X3D as it only slows down the responsiveness a bit but it seems like on 7840HS and 8845HS, at least the "Connect"/"Disconnect" button completely disappears along with the general sluggishness of the application. There seems to be some mismatch between Silab drivers on Linux on AMD systems and CoolTerm on Linux responsible for these issues. I say Silab because I tried this with CH340 and I did not see any issues with CH340 either.

Roger, I wanted to check in and see if there are certain architecture specific build flags that would need to be addressed when building for Linux on AMD systems as I see the installer provided is an Intel 64 bit installer? I am guessing not but just wanted to double check. If there are any debug steps you would like me to take to debug compatibility on Linux+AMD systems, I'd be happy to do so. I currently have a working Intel system that I can use for my projects so I am not blocked by this but I would definitely love to see CoolTerm working on my main AMD 5700X3D system as that is the primary system that I use for everything.

Thank you again for this great application

Hi,

there is a 64Bit ARM Linux build. It's listed as "Raspberry Pi 64Bit" on my website. Give this one a try. It should work.

For Linux builds specifically, I recommend turning on the "Avoid Plain Flicker" option in the Preferences and limiting the size of the receive buffer to about 10,000 bytes or so.

I hope this helps.
